S.I.M.S. Summer Initiative Program
Collaboration with PA Career Links (JTBC) for youth from 14-24
This program gave the youth the opportunity to work in the field with real projects and clients from beginning to end. The youth had the opportunity to work in three different fields: construction, landscaping and food service.
Sims Contracting Company facilitated the construction program allowing 17 young adults to experience how a construction project is completed. They were exposed to the walk-through process, design of the client's vision as well as the execution of work. These participants completed demo, framing, flooring, painting, plumbing, siding and more for the residents of Aliquippa and the surrounding areas of Beaver County.
Our landscaping program was run by Brown Bear Landscaping and employed 8 young adults. They maintained residential and commercial yards in Beaver and Allegheny County. Including many Aliquippa residents that requested their services after seeing the completed projects. This program started early to beat the heat meaning that these participants got up and were ready to work at 7 am during the summer!
The newest facet of the program was our food service program. Marla's House took the lead for the 5 youth that were interested in exploring a career in the food industry. They learned food safety, food prep and how to operate in a fast-paced commercial kitchen. Creating their own dishes, serving take out and catered events, they were exposed to what it means to be in the restaurant business.
